If you’re considering window replacement, you’ve probably realized just how many types there are. Do you replace like-for-like? Or is there a better option that would be easier to use, and maybe even improve your home comfort? From sliding windows, to casements and awnings, to statement bay windows – it can be hard to make a decision.
There may be a lot of choice, but fear not! The Window Geeks are here with a handy guide to the best window styles for your home. Let’s dive in…
Sliding windows are a popular choice for modern homes, known for their sleek design and ease of operation. They feature an operable window that glide horizontally along tracks, making them perfect for areas with limited space. Sliding windows offer excellent ventilation and are often used in bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchens. They’re true classics – which is why Centra’s sliding windows can be found in our Classic Collection. We also recently launched our new triple pane sliders!
Casement windows are hinged on one side and open outward. They’re easy to operate with a hand crank, making them a smart choice for hard-to-reach places. Need a window above a sink, countertop, or furniture? These are the windows for you! They provide elevated energy efficiency, excellent ventilation, and great views, making them ideal for living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms. Casement windows are available in various sizes and can suit different architectural styles.
Awning windows are hinged at the top and open outward from the bottom – meaning they resemble awnings when opened! They are great for areas with high moisture levels, such as bathrooms and kitchens, as they can be left open during light rain for ventilation. This type of opening is often used in combination with fixed windows to create a custom look, and privacy glass is regularly used for the inoperable portion, making them especially good for washrooms.
Bay and bow windows protrude from the home’s exterior wall, creating a small alcove inside and providing more indoor space. They make a statement, adding architectural interest to both the interior and exterior and providing panoramic views and ample natural light. Bay windows typically have three panels, while bow windows have four or more, creating a curved appearance. If you’re eyeing up a more significant change with your home renovation, bay or bow is the way to go!
Picture windows are large, fixed windows that do not open or close. They’re designed to frame scenic views and let in lots of natural light, making them perfect for living rooms, dining areas, and entryways. They’re a fantastic option in places where you don’t need a window to open. They’re tightly sealed around all edges, making them high-performance and providing exceptional levels of energy efficiency and home comfort.
Why limit your options when it comes to home design? Custom-shaped windows allow homeowners to create unique and personalized spaces that fit to their specific design preferences. Whether it’s circles, hexagons, or arches – Centra can make it happen. Custom shapes are also picture windows, meaning you gain the benefit of added energy efficiency. The possibilities are endless!
And there you have it – the six best window styles for homeowners. Remember, the world of window design doesn’t end at operability and shape. Be sure to consider your colour choice and grids, too!
