Double-Hung vs Single-Hung Windows: Which are Better?

Geek Level 1

There are plenty of options when it comes to new windows, and for the modern homeowner, sliding windows are one of the most popular choices. Double-hung windows are among a number of possible configurations. So, what are double-hung windows? Are they as energy efficient as other options? Let’s find out!

How Do Sliding Windows Operate?

Sliding windows consist of two sashes, one or both of which slide along a track either horizontally or vertically. When they slide vertically, there are two main configurations in terms of operability:

Single-Hung Windows

Single-hung windows feature two sashes – one fixed and one movable. The movable sash will slide up and down within the frame.

Double-Hung Windows

With double-hung windows, both sashes can move up and down. This means that either the top or the bottom part of the window can be opened for ventilation.

What is the Cost of Double-Hung Windows?

While some homeowners like the idea of double-hung windows for their renovation projects, they are more complex than regular sliding windows and have more moving parts. Because of this, you’re likely looking at spending at least 20% more than you would be for a single-hung window. When you’re applying this increase to multiple windows across your project, the extra cost quickly adds up. That’s one major downside, but are there other disadvantages to double-hung windows?

How Energy-Efficient are Double-Hung Windows?

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a homeowner undertaking window replacement who is not concerned about seeing an improvement in energy efficiency – it’s one of the main reasons we upgrade our homes, after all. So how do double-hung windows compare to their counterparts? Because of the added complexity of the design and extra moving parts, these windows tend to be less energy efficient than other options in addition to the higher price tag. This means you will have to opt for features such as more advanced glass coatings which incur yet more costs just to reach the same efficiency level as simpler designs.

How Hard is Maintaining Double-Hung Windows?

Maintaining double-hung windows can require more effort than their simpler single-hung counterparts and horizontal sliding windows. The moving parts – both sashes – are susceptible to wear and tear, and keeping the tracks clean and lubricated is essential to ensure smooth operation. Over time, hardware that helps balance the sashes can deteriorate, leading to difficulty in opening or closing the window. Regular maintenance involves inspecting the window seals, cleaning the glass, and ensuring that the tracks remain free from debris. It’s essential to stay on top of maintenance to avoid more costly repairs down the line.

What are the Other Performance Issues of Double-Hung Windows?

The added complexity of double-hung windows means they are more prone to failures, such as issues with the balance system, tracks, or locking mechanisms. These problems can be more expensive and time-consuming to repair compared to single-hung windows, which tend to have fewer moving parts. Additionally, double-hung windows might not provide as tight of a seal as other windows, which could impact their performance in extreme weather conditions. Another complaint we hear from homeowners who have double-hung windows is the entry of water into the home when they try to open them after rain or snow.

At the end of the day, unless you really prefer the look of double-hung windows, the higher costs, maintenance, and potential for performance issues may make single-hung or alternative window types a better option. Consider your priorities – whether it’s ease of maintenance, energy efficiency, or aesthetic appeal – when deciding between window styles.
