5 Ways New Windows Can Change Your Life

Geek Level 1

The winners of 2024’s Centra Cares Home Renovation Contest, the Trottier family, are now enjoying all the benefits of modern, high-performance windows and doors. CTV paid them a visit and spoke to one of our Window Geeks about what a huge difference these upgrades would make. So what are some of the main ways window replacement can improve your life at home? Let’s find out…

Energy Efficiency

One of the most significant benefits of new windows is their superior energy efficiency. This was an area where the Trottier Family’s windows were seriously lacking. Modern windows feature advanced technologies that help regulate your home’s temperatures more effectively than older models. This includes extra glazing, LoE coatings, and argon gas fills between panes, all of which work together to significantly reduce heat transfer. This means your home stays warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, reducing the need for heating and cooling systems to work overtime. The result? A major increase in home comfort, no matter the season.

Lower Bills

Thanks to the major boost in energy efficiency, the Trottiers and anyone else upgrading their windows can expect to see a drop in their energy bills. We’ve seen many homeowners report a reduced need for heating and air conditioning, saving them money throughout the year. These savings add up, making window replacement a smart investment that helps pay for itself over time while improving your home comfort.

A Safer Home

When it comes to older windows, there are plenty of security concerns. They often have outdated locking mechanisms that can be easily bypassed. We’ve seen homeowners whose locks have broken entirely on their older windows, and they have had to resort to temporary measures such as using wooden planks to prevent them being opened from outside. Thankfully, new windows come equipped with multi-point locking systems and reinforced frames that enhance the security of your home. Laminated glass options are also available that are far more resistant to breakage. Upgrading windows can provide peace of mind by making your home a safer place.

Reduced Drafts and Moisture

Many homeowners experience mildew and mould issues with their windows, and the same was true of our Home Renovation Contest winners. Condensation is normal (as long as it’s not between the glass panes), and this is especially likely in kitchens and bathrooms – excessive moisture buildup can still cause problems, however. Frame materials like wood are particularly bad culprits. Newer materials like vinyl are considerably easier to clean and maintain, and extra glass panes combined with good ventilation should help address certain condensation issues to begin with.

Drafts are another issue that could be caused by the frame or poor sealing on older windows. There are stopgap measures which can help reduce their impact, but drafts are a major sign that you should look into window replacement services.

Sound Control

One of the biggest challenges for the Trottier family was coping with outdoor noise. While at first glance their home appears to be in a peaceful suburban area, they live directly beneath a flight path and in close proximity to a busy port which operates late into the night. Older windows with their single panes and poor-quality frames do close to nothing to block out this noise.

Modern windows and doors make a big difference right off the bat with their additional glass panes and superior seals – Tanya claims their new windows have already lessened the sound from outdoors by 80%! There are other options with new windows to combat noise as much as possible – homeowners who are finding it to be particularly problematic can consider laminate glass and dissimilar glass panes which work to reduce soundwaves.
