Can New Windows & Patio Doors Make Homes Safer?

One of our Window Geeks recently spoke to Global BC Open House about security problems surrounding old patio doors and windows. So what are these issues, and what can you do to make your home safer?

How Does the Patio Door Slide?

With older patio doors, the operable part of the door actually slides on the outside much of the time. This can be problematic, as someone looking to break in can lift it out of the track to gain access to the home. This is reversed on newer patio doors and it will instead slide on the inside, making it more difficult for intruders.

Door Locks

When it comes to locks, the more the merrier. In order to improve your security at home, new patio doors will feature a double rhino hook, making them much more secure. If a door doesn’t have an extra foot lock, you can add one yourself from the hardware store for an extra level of protection.

Glass Type

Patio doors use tempered glass for safety, which makes them more secure. Windows, however, often use annealed glass which is easier to break. Upgrading to laminated glass will make it harder for potential intruders to get into the home through these windows.

Bonus Tip: Window Bars

Some buildings will use window bars on the ground floor for added protection. While this may work to keep people out, they can also be very dangerous as they can prevent escape in case of a fire. Modern windows with their added security features should not need bars to keep you safe in your home.
