Automation Engineer

The Automation Engineer will lead the advancement of automation at our Calgary manufacturing plant, driving efficiency, quality, and innovation in the production of high-performance windows and doors. In this hands-on role, you’ll design, install, and maintain sophisticated automation systems, assess current processes, and implement customized solutions for seamless production integration. You’ll also provide technical support, training, and ensure compliance, while building a roadmap for continuous improvement to elevate our manufacturing capabilities to the next level.

Automation Strategy and Roadmap Development:

  • Assess current production workflows to identify opportunities for automation.
  • Develop a comprehensive automation strategy that aligns with short-term priorities and long-term operational goals.
  • Define and track key performance metrics to ensure continuous improvement.

Design, Integration, and Implementation:

  • Lead the design, testing, and integration of tailored automation solutions, ensuring seamless adoption into existing systems.
  • Commission state-of-the-art equipment, such as industrial robots and precision control systems, to elevate productivity.
  • Collaborate with production teams to minimize disruptions and optimize performance during rollouts.

Continuous Improvement and Optimization:

  • Conduct detailed performance analyses to refine automation systems and maximize efficiency.
  • Implement data-driven improvement programs, ensuring systems evolve alongside production demands.
  • Establish benchmarks and drive iterative advancements for speed, accuracy, and reliability.

Maintenance and Reliability:

  • Develop and execute preventive maintenance programs to ensure the longevity and reliability of automation systems.
  • Train maintenance staff in troubleshooting and system upkeep to build an in-house support team.

Project Management and Collaboration:

  • Oversee end-to-end management of automation projects, from concept to delivery.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams in production, quality control, and maintenance to align initiatives with broader goals.
  • Document processes thoroughly, from technical specifications to standard operating procedures, to ensure operational continuity.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Conduct risk assessments and maintain a zero-incident safety record.
  • Stay ahead of regulatory requirements, ensuring all systems meet industry and compliance standards.

Education & Experience:

  • A degree in Electrical, Computer, or Mechatronics Engineering, or 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • 3-5 years in designing, implementing, and commissioning automation systems in machinery or process solutions.

Technical Expertise:

  • Proficiency with PLCs, HMIs, and CNC programming (e.g., Schneider, Siemens, Mitsubishi).
  • Skilled in industrial machinery design, motion controls, and fabrication processes (e.g., CNC, 3D printing, welding).
  • Hands-on experience with Autodesk tools such as Inventor, Fusion, and AutoCAD.

Problem-Solving Skills:

  • Ability to troubleshoot complex systems and implement effective solutions.
  • Strong analytical mindset to translate data into actionable improvements.

Soft Skills:

  • Exceptional communication and project management abilities.
  • A collaborative team player who thrives in dynamic environments.

Bonus Skills:

  • Knowledge of programming languages (e.g., C#, Python) is a strong asset.
